Setting Goals Can Make You More Productive

Imagine the next time you join a discussion about Being More Productive. When you start sharing the fascinating facts on Being More Productive, your friends will be absolutely amazed.

Are you one of those people in the office who are always the first to speak up at meetings, volunteer for committees or participate in many office activities? Are you often the first one to arrive at work and the last one to leave? You are always tapping away on your computer and never have time for a lunch brake. You are always jumping from one task to the next, and you usually have a trail of unfinished tasks in your wake. Your productivity suffers.

You are not the only one who faces this problem every day. There are many people like you in the workplace who never finishes one task before moving on to the next. Half a dozen word processing windows, e-mail messages and assorted internet searches take up their computer screen’s real estate. Their workspace — and yours — is covered with sticky notes and half-read file folders.

Before your nerves snap and you sink so deep into this mess called unproductivity, stop and re-group. Your problems can be easily solved by these two words: Set Goals. Here is an incredibly simple way to start getting these problems under control. Every morning, before you turn on your computer, write down five things that you need to accomplish that day on an index card or a notepad. Make sure you include a small task that you are certain you can complete in one day. This will give you a sense of completion that will eventually be your motivation to finish all of your other tasks. Sooner or later, you will gain a sense of satisfaction in completing daily tasks brought about by writing down your goals. Don’t worry if your list is small. You will know when you can add more tasks to your list and be able to accomplish them all during your work day. When you set up your daily goals, make sure you put them in writing and then go ahead and complete all of them. This will help you to cure yourself of daily disorganization and unproductivity.

You may not consider everything you just read to be crucial information about Being More Productive. But don’t be surprised if you find yourself recalling and using this very information in the next few days.

Be smart. Don’t waste your energy and lose momentum on one task because you let yourself be distracted by another task. Work with your daily goals list. Work on finishing the tasks on your lists first, before tackling any others. Do you really need to be on the Christmas party committee when you have got three reports to finish?

Hopefully the information above has contributed to your understanding of Being More Productive. Share your new understanding about Being More Productive with others. They will thank you for it some day.

I Hate Setting Goals

I am going to be honest with you. I hate setting goals. I have never been very good at keeping them. In actual fact I am good at setting goals but terrible at carrying them out. I am also a hypocrite. I have told many people that they need to set goals to find myself doing the opposite.

Allow me tell you something else that is true. You must fail in order to succeed. Every success is given birth by failure. Some of the best inventions came after many attempts at success - that failed. So let’s start by saying that failure is a part of success. You must fail, which brings me to this point. You have to know what does not work in order to know what will work. I must find out what is wrong with the goals that I am setting. I must find out what does not work for me when setting goals.

Put failure in perspective. I am not saying that failure as a whole brings success. What I am saying is that if something fails it is relative to the overall success of any given desired result. So now one can determine that action “A” did not work, so we can discount “A” in relation to success in this particular project.

You see goals can be painful. Goals force you to face your actual circumstances as they are and then require you to make a commitment to making things better. Nobody wants to know what is wrong they just want to be told what to do to make it right. So I see in myself that I fail in executing the goals that I set. Then I ask myself why? I notice that you can say things like I want to earn $5000 a month. This is very nice - but I do not like what I have to do in order to achieve it - or worst still I write down what I need to do, agree on it, but in the back of my mind there is a sense of disbelief. Then there is the point when I realize that it is not practical given the circumstances that I am in at the present time. One might say in order to earn $5000 I need to learn new techniques then apply them, once applied I need to test and fix what does not work. The problem with this is time. If I have a job how many hours can I allocate to this and then how will I have time to have a life, have a little fun. So I see there are problems. I begin to see why my desire to get a certain result may fail, or rather will fail based on my current status.

The common thread here is the element of failure in terms of the way I am setting goals. This leads to the following, nobody wants to fail. We are thought that failure is bad. That is why so few succeed because so many do not want to fail. I can tell you what I realized in myself. When things go wrong I loose all motivation and this leads to poor execution. Then when setting new goals there is a subconscious disbelief to achieving success purely due to the fact that I failed so often. But what I never did is see that failure is the key to success.

You see we hear in all the movies that failure is not an option, but that is just romantic theory because things will go wrong. I myself did not handle failure very well. I just wanted someone to tell me what works. However life is not like that. There is also the element of laziness. “Are you telling me after doing all this I might fail? Why bother even starting then”? So you may realize that your passion for what you are doing is shallow, or that you really do not have a big picture. Or that you really do not like what you are doing. Or that you just want the glory, the image or the money.

Let me tell you that nobody can set goals for you. Nobody knows there situation better than you do. This is like those poor folks who join get quick rich schemes. The problem is not the system but the fact that the person engaging in it, may not have the resources, time or dedication to execute the plan all the way to success.

So you see you must be frightfully honest and open to failure, and then you must be prepared to thrash it out in extreme detail. Once that is done I can tell you that success is the only option.

Reaching Your Goals: A Ridiculous Way to Succeed

If you’ve ever had any sales training, you’ve probably been taught the technique called “Reduction to the Ridiculous.” This is the technique of breaking a price down to smaller and smaller units until it sounds insignificant compared to the value of your product. Here’s an example…

Say you’re talking to an insurance agent. Nothing against insurance agents, some of them are my friends, it just makes a good example. You’re buying car insurance, and your friendly agent sees your jaw drop when he tells you the annual premium. Now he starts breaking it down- $1200 per year becomes $100 per month, which is about $3 a day, or 13 cents an hour or less than a penny a minute. Or, since he knows you drive 24,000 miles a year, your premium is only 50 cents per mile… A small price to pay to avoid a financial wipeout in case you cause an accident, right? ;-)

We can apply the same technique to Success. Here’s the road map:

Vision

|
V
Plans
|
|
V
Goals
|
|
V
Steps
|
|
V
Specific Actions

Now let’s look at each step.

Vision

Your Vision is what your life would look like if you had everything that’s important to you. Suppose you had all the free time and money you needed to do anything you wanted. That “anything” is your Vision. In his best-seller The Greatest Networker In the World, John Fogg calls it “the movie in your mind.” I love this visual… You close your eyes and imagine you are standing in front of a theatre. Picture the neon sign above the marquee. The bright lights chasing themselves around the title of the current feature. Feel the push of the crowd as they move around you to get their tickets. You check the title- “You- the True Story Of His/Her Amazing Life.” With a title like that, you have to buy a ticket, right?

You buy your ticket, and find a seat, about a third back, right in the center. Feel yourself sinking back into the plush velvet of the rich seat. Slide back and have some fresh popcorn. Settle in…

The show starts. There you are. Now fill in the action on the silver screen. See yourself doing the things you dream of doing. When the show is over, open your eyes. You have a Vision.

Plans

Plans are the elements of your vision. Suppose a scene from your movie showed you presenting a large check to your favorite charity. To do so, you will need access to a large amount of money. In other words, to make that scene come true, you need to be wealthy.

To reach part of your vision, you plan to Get Rich.

Goals

Goals are the milestones you use to measure your progress in following your plan. For our plan to Get Rich, we might set the following goals:

1. Net Worth of $10,000,000
2. Annual Income of $1,000,000
3. Enough passive and residual income to cover monthly expenses without working.
4. And so on…

Many advise you to put a strict deadline on your goals. I don’t follow that, because it sets you up for failure. I would much prefer to set a target date, simply as a point of reference to evaluate progress. For the goal of $1,000,000 annual income, you might set a target of ten years. Each year, you can evaluate and ask yourself, ‘if I continue at my current pace, how likely am I to hit my target.’ If the answer is ‘very likely,’ keep the target. If the answer is ‘I’ll reach it much sooner,’ move up the date. If the answer is ‘not gonna happen’, you need to make a decision.

Do you change your target date? Or do you change what you are doing in order to accelerate your progress? Do you change the goal altogether? You have to decide which way you want to go.

If you think you are doing as well as you are capable of doing, go ahead and move the target date out. You’ll be evaluating again in a year, and can adjust as necessary.

If you think there is room for improvement, note that and go to the next step.

Steps

To reach net worth of $10,000,000, you decide the steps are:

> Create a business worth $5,000,000
> Use profits from the business to build a portfolio worth $2,000,000
> Use profits from the business and portfolio to acquire real estate worth $3,000,000

Let’s focus for now on “create a business worth $5,000,000″.

One common method for valuing a business is to multiply the yearly earnings by some factor. Let’s say that a buyer wants to recoup his investment in five years. Disregarding taxes and such, he would multiply the business’s earnings by 5 to arrive at a purchase price. So in order for our business to be valued at $5,000,000, it would have to generate $1,000,000 per year in revenue.

Starting from scratch and building a million-dollar-a-year business is like eating an elephant- you have to do it one bite at a time.

Let’s use a network marketing business and work the numbers backwards. I’m going to make some stuff up here, just to keep the arithmetic simple. We’re going to ignore taxes and assume perfect duplication (in other words, every member of the organization does exactly the same thing). This obviously won’t happen in real life, and it still illustrates the principle. We’re also going to assume that direct commissions and all overrides are 20% (which would make the numbers implode if this wasn’t made up ;-). The plan pays 5 levels deep, and follows “five who get five who get five, etc.”

To generate $1,000,000 in revenue would require $5,000,000 in volume.

One leg would look like this:

You
5 on level 1
25 on level 2
125 on level 3
625 on level 4
3125 on level 5

Total of 3,906 people in each leg. You build one leg per year for ten years, or an organization of 39,060 people. Each person would need to generate $128 in volume, or about $11 per month, on average.

Your step is to build one leg per year with an average volume of $128 per distributor per year.

Now it’s time to work backwards again. To keep things simple again, we’ll just assume the 80/20 rule holds here. We’ll assume that for everything you do, you get your intended result 1 out of 5 times.

So, to build one productive leg, you need to start five legs per year. That means finding a new rep every 2 months (I’m only making you work 10 months a year. Am I a nice guy, or what?)

Keeping the 80/20 rule,

1 leg = 5 new front line reps
5 new front line reps = 25 serious presentations
25 presentations = 125 in the pipeline
125 in the pipeline = 625 initial responses
625 initial responses = 3125 looking
3125 looking = 15625 impressions

so to get our new leg, we have to reach 15,625 people. Working 5 days a week for two months, that’s about 390 people per day. Now we have something we have control over, and it’s time for (ta-dah):

Specific Actions

What Specific Daily Actions (SDA) can you take to put your message in front of 390 people per day?

How about submitting an article to an ezine that reaches 400 subscribers? (oops, 80/20 rule, make that ’submitting an article to 5 ezines, each with 400 subscribers, and counting on one publication)

How about posting on a forum read by 2,000 people? Or sending a post to a mailing lists with 2000 subscribers? (Assuming 20% will notice your sig and click on it.)

You get the idea. Your SDA’s are things you have control over, so they’re actions you can be accountable for.

From “building a business worth $5,000,000″ to “taking one specific action every day”. How’s that for a ridiculous(-ly simple) way to succeed? Just go out and take one specific action every day towards your vision. Each day counts.

Listen to the Exhortation of the Dawn!
Look to this Day!
For it is Life, the very Life of Life.
For in its brief course lie all the Verities
and Realities of your Existence:
The Bliss of Growth,
The Glory of Action,
The Splendor of Beauty.
For Yesterday is but a Dream,
And Tomorrow is only a Vision;
But Today well-lived makes every
Yesterday a Dream of Happiness
And every Tomorrow a Vision of Hope.

Look well therefore to this Day!
Such is the Salutation of the Dawn.

Follow Your Dreams

It is that time of year once more when many people are working on the goals they have set for themselves for the new year. It’s the same thing every year. The goals that people set for themselves are usually along the lines of, “I want to lose weight”, ” I want to quit smoking”, “I want to exercise more” etc. Newsletters and Magazines are full of articles on how to accomplish these things.

Although the normal resolutions are good and healthy for you, they make you focus on negative aspects of your life, essentially, what you should not be doing…smoking, eating badly, being lazy etc. The problem I see with these resolutions is that it makes people think negatively and feel guilty, especially when February rolls around and they realize that they were not able to keep up with their resolutions. By thinking negatively, we set ourselves up for failure.

I want to suggest something different to you. Let us not dwell on new year resolutions that go down the drain by February, let’s focus on something a little different. Positive thinking brings results. Results make us happy and content. When we are content and focused on positive things we will find that many negative aspects of our lives fall away on their own. It is as if the body says, “I don’t need these negative things in my life anymore” and voila, they drop away without effort.

My suggestion to you is that this year we dwell on positive things. Instead of dwelling on what we want to rid ourselves of this year, let us dwell on what positive things we want to see in our lives. Let us focus on our dreams and make them a reality in our lives.

Many people don’t give much time thinking about making their dreams come true. They are caught up in the rat race of life and a worldly way of thinking. My suggestion is that we focus on a more spiritual way of thinking. Let us take the time to think about what we really want in life and then focus on setting goals that will bring us closer to our dreams.

Yes, even when following your dreams, one must set goals or we will never accomplish that which we dream of. Don’t get caught up in wishful thinking but put some action behind your thoughts. The secret to realizing your dreams is to break your objective into small steps. Ask yourself, “What do I need to do in order to accomplish this goal?” then break it down into bite size pieces.

This week we drove from Hamburg to Munich because we had to check out our new apartment and see about my fianc©’s new job out there. It is a very long drive and if you drive fast and push your limits (which most people want to do) you can make the journey in 8 hours. BUT, if you don’t want to stress yourself out, you have to make sure you take time for breaks and stretching so it ends up taking between 10-12 hours, depending on traffic etc. Then you end up at the end of the journey relaxed. Tired still, but relaxed ;-)

Think of your dreams as your destination. It may not be right around the corner, most dreams aren’t, but if you have patience, and pace yourself you WILL arrive at your destination. The problem most people run into with goal setting is that we think we can accomplish it much faster if we push themselves to the limit. When we hit problems that will slow us down, we end up getting frustrated and often give up. If, we would relax and think clearly when we hit a roadblock to our dreams, we would be able to figure out alternative routes to our destination. Detours do not mean failure and stalled traffic does not mean that we must give up and forget about our destination. We will reach our goals if we relax, persevere and be willing to figure out alternatives to our situation. We don’t need to drive ourselves like maniacs in order to reach our destination. Life is not the autobahn!

Road plan to your dreams:
1.Figure out what you want the most in life. What is your dream?
2.Set small, realistic steps so you can clearly map out the way to your destination, your dream. Remember that you cannot swim the ocean.
3.Be prepared to take an alternative route if you run into roadblocks.
4.Don’t give up. You WILL reach your destination.

This new year, let us think about the positive things we want in our life. Take the time now, to think about what you really want and then set about making up your road plan. Wishful thinking won’t accomplish anything. Make plans and follow your dreams!

The Budget Webmaster’s 6 Step Guide to Improving Existing Rankings in Google

Filed under:Internet Search Engine Optimization Resources — posted on March 26, 2009 @ 8:06 pm

The Budget Webmaster’s 6 Step Guide to Improving Existing Rankings in Google

You know the scenario. You get an occasional click from Google for a certain keyword. You go to find out why you aren’t getting more clicks, and you find out that you’re ranked in the 30’s, 50’s, or heaven forbid, the 300’s. “Great”, you think, “I finally get ranked for a good keyword and it’s a worthless ranking”.

Not necessarily.

If you got ranked for a keyword you wanted At All, the game’s not over yet. If your site’s content is geared towards that subject, you can get your ranking in search engines increased, at no cost. How?

The first thing you want to do is find out how well you are ranked for this keyword. For Google in particular, this used to be a difficult chore. In the old days of 2003, you’d spend your valuable time doing a search on your desired keyword, then a sub-search for your site, and crawling through pages of listings to find out exactly where you stood.

Now there is hope in the form of the following website. Direct your browser to:

http://www.googlerankings.com/index.php

You can use this site to find out what number you come up for in the Google listings, which can be very powerful information if used correctly. If you’re ranked in the top 1000, you have a shot at raising your listing for that page by tweaking the page to be a little more relevant.

So, secondly, you have to know how good a shot you have at getting a better listing. Go to:

http://www.searchguild.com/difficulty/

I posted a tip about this a month ago, and it’s also in the free optimization Guide I released the week of March 7th. It tells you how hard it is to rank well for certain keywords in Google. You’ll need a free Google API key to use it.

Now that you know your chances, the third piece of information you need to know is how much traffic you can expect. Digital Point has a free tool that gives an approximation of how many hits per day a good ranking gets. Access it here:

http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/suggestion/

Okay, let’s say everything checks out so far. You rank in the top 1000. The term you want won’t be that hard to get, and will get you enough traffic per month to justify your efforts.

Our fifth step is to take the term you chose and optimize your page.

This site does periodic reports on the search engines, and their February report gives their analysis of what the best ranking pages in Google have in common. And as a free bonus, it will also tell you what Yahoo wants. Follow the following link for details-http://www.gorank.com

Now that you know what to shoot for, you need to know how the page you want will measure up- you need to calculate your keyword density. You can also do the sixth step at gorank.com - it has a free tool that will calculate it for you. Prepare your page with that in mind, re-upload, and you’re almost done.

Great, you’re all set. Now you should submit your site to Google, right?

Wrong. Absolutely not. If you can help it, you should never, ever submit any page of your site to Google. Let it find you. HOW it finds you can affect your page rank. I don’t mean that there is a standard penalty for submitting. There’s been speculation on that for a while but I have yet to prove it matters.

What I DO know from personal experience and testing on my member’s sites, is that getting the Googlebot search engine spider to happen upon your site shaves up to 6 weeks off the standard time it takes for indexing. You can show up in Google in as little as 4 days.

Which site links to you can also affect your Google Page Rank. While this is not as important as it once was, it still carries significant weight- my site didn’t start getting spidered on a daily basis until my Page Rank increased to 5.

So even if the spider comes to your site on a Monthly basis, you’re better off waiting for the spider to come back by. That’s the seventh step, let your page be re-discovered with it’s great new changes.

And yes, there’s an even faster, better way to get Google.com’s search engine spider to re-index that page, but that’s another article, isn’t it?

Miami Is Fun

Miami is one of the best places in the country to take a quick weekend getaway. There are often specials where you can get cheap airline tickets for less than $500 round trip during off season. Hotels run specials there a lot where you can stay 4 or 5 nights for under $150 a night. Cheap hotels in Miami are easy to find, especially if you’re willing to stay a little bit off the beach. You can find a hotel across the street from the ocean, for example, with a pool and air conditioning, for a hundred dollars less a night and all you have to do is cross the street. If you’re willing to stay outside of Miami Beach (either the northern suburbs, or inland) you can find hotel rooms for much less money as well, except for areas within the city of Miami that are huge tourist attractions, like Coconut Grove and Coral Gables .

Eating on the cheap in Miami is fairly easy to do as well. Because there are a lot of retirees in Florida, you can take advantage of early bird specials if you’re willing to eat before 6 pm. While Miami also has a lot of high priced restaurants, there are local ethnic places, including Cuban food, Vietnamese food, Chinese food and Jewish delis with great hot meals at lower prices.

Cheap entertainment in Miami is easy to find. There is lively street life there like the piazzas in Europe, which can be found on Lincoln Road, in South Beach, in Coconut Grove, in Coral Gables and in many other neighborhoods. Lincoln Road in particular offers live entertainment on weekends as well as booths set up with antiques on alternate Sundays.

Of course, the beaches in the Miami area are a huge source of free entertainment. There are many great state parks there as well, and while attractions that children would enjoy can be expensive, you can buy coupon books that will at least reduce the rate to visit them. Examples of these are the Miami Zoo, Parrot Island, and Seaworld, among others.

Numerous gambling house games can instigate you to get far too infatuated very swiftly. Consider the the classic slot-machine, a coin operated machine with 3+ gears spinning when a bar affixed to it is started. This machine consistently will compensate punters with reference to a range of designs presented on the front panel of the appliance. Regrettably, betting house games encourage a misconception of supremacy, effectively deluding the gaming enthusiast - the addressee is endowed options, but actually these can’t really level the patron’s statistical negative odds. This is brought about by the the betting establishment not returning the full amount as expected. This structured arrangement is continuously found in acclaimed casino games such as seven-card stud poker, dice, roulette or blackjack.

Five-card stud is indisputably a highly trendy casino game. The betting aficionados, meticulously guarding their partially covered cards, place their stakes in a central pot that is ultimately granted to the winning player in possession of the best hand. (And yes, the bluff may win) Much the same as five-card stud, blackjack is likewise a very popular casino game. A considerable chunk of its is thanks to its particular mix of luck and knowledge and decision making, and a method labeled “counting”. It is a pretty complex technique in which gambling enthusiasts can shift the probabilities of the game in their interest by both wagering & systematic opetations in accordance with the cards deployed.

Craps is a well-known gambling hall pastime where people try to predict the throw of two dice. Gamblers must wager on the result of 1 roll, or on a string of cycles on 2 dice. Dissimilar to blackjack, there’s no easily available bona fide winner tactics punters could employ to improve the odds. Roulette is a prominent game of luck; a croupier whirls a roulette wheel containing thirtyseven (as applicable to European roulette) or precisely 38 (American roulette) differently numbered divisions in which a ball will settle, which will be the winner Then if a gamester bets on a number and wins i.e. they’ve got a lucky hand, the set remuneration is going to be thirty five to 1, the wager itself being paid out. Thus in totality it’s multiplied by thirty-six.

Try to be emphatically alert nevertheless as all of these betting establishment gambling pastimes are dependency building. Far too many lives have been wasted thru reckless gambling & even if it definitely might be entertaining, do try to govern your play.

What Do You Value Most? Part 2

Knowing who you are, what you believe in and what you stand for as a person will greatly improve your chances of finding success happiness, and achieving what you want from your life.

To determine your values you need to think about what is really important to you as a person, in all areas of you life. One of the most famous Americans of all time, Benjamin Franklin, set out how he intended to live his life at the age of 22. He came up with the following 13 categories - temperance, silence, order, resolution, frugality, industry, sincerity, justice, moderation, cleanliness, tranquillity, chastity and humility. He wrote a sentence or more about each of these topics and resolved to live his life in accordance with these values.

I’m not suggesting anyone should follow this example and try to live up to this ideal. Everyone is unique and only you can decide what is most important to you. There are, however, some areas that many people may find of use as a general framework:

Relationships with family, friends and other people; work/career and overall occupational satisfaction; personal integrity, self respect, inner harmony, spirituality; quality of life, happiness, pleasure, fulfilment; financial security and money matters; health and fitness.

This is by no means an exhaustive list. You’ll probably find other subjects important to you that you’ll also want to consider. Nor will everything mentioned here be important to everyone, but if you spend some time considering your thoughts on these areas a starting point, this should help to get you looking and thinking in the right direction and give some indication of your values.

Another exercise that can help is to honestly think about how people who know you would describe you to someone else. Are you happy with these descriptions? Does this fit in with your image of yourself and how you would like others to see you? What traits would you most like be known and remembered for?

If you are serious about creating your ideal future, clarifying your values will be one of the most important exercises you will ever undertake. If you’re not altogether happy with what you discover, the good news is that you can change anything about yourself - if it’s important enough to you, and you are prepared to make the commitment and put in the necessary effort.

What you have been in the past and where you’re coming from doesn’t really matter. It’s where your going that’s important, and self awareness and determining what really matters to you most will make creating you ideal future much easier.
