None of Us Arrived with an Owner’s Manual: A Fresh Perspective on the Drive to Lead (part 2)

Why didn’t I get an Owner’s Manual

After a little while with life happening and no sign of the Manual we began to realize we would need to make the best of it. We began to look around to see who had one and studied what they knew, surely some of it must be generic! We began to study our parents, our siblings - if they looked competent enough, and our other care givers.

They all seemed like gods to our small experience of life, so confident, so able, so talented. Surely they must have a great version of their Owner’s Manual! Many of us translated this into a presumption that they had a Manual and it was a wonderful copy, full of talents and abilities. We had our confidence high that we could do it! We could find mastery.

After a while of looking it seemed like everyone big had one. Another doubt crept in, maybe we were the only one who didn’t get one. We got secretive about it. Hiding the humiliation, coldness, rejection, betrayal and abandonment deep inside ourselves.

Many of us did such a good job we threw away the key and forgot we ever had such deep and painful doubts about our ability to make it here. Instead we got involved in studying others, working at it and seeking to create a new version of our own. Some of us got so good at this game we forgot why we were doing it; there just remained some deep unrest about who we really are.

Some of us progressed from here and made different conclusions based on our perception of those around us. Some of us looked at our siblings and thought they were a bit spare, maybe they didn’t get one either. Maybe it was just our family, all our generation, kids in our neighborhood and so on.

Some of us looked at our parents and thought they got a warped one, however our faith in them and their ability to support us was so great that we willing joined into their pain and shame. We were so driven to work out how to operate here, it was such a primary drive we would do anything to learn.

Crisis is a blessing in disguise.

The strange thing is this was not a real representation of reality. Our hearts are wonderful places of honor, strength and courage. Anyone in an extreme crisis has not needed to doubt the courage of our true nature. Our heroic acts are legendary. The terrorist attacks of recent times bring this home to us. In Bali, ordinary injured Australians did extraordinary things and saved lives. In New York, September 11 brought out an extraordinary unity in this big, fast, hard city. The tradition is older, our heros of the wars; our pioneers of territory, mind, spirit and heart; our popular leaders’ values and so the list is infinite.

The question is never what is the value of the human heart, rather it is - is our heart open? Can we access our greatness or have we become immune, scared or so small we no longer want to go there for fear it won’t be OK anymore.

Put aside the falseness of your egoic nature, the part you alone created, apart from your heart. Take up instead your essential nature, who you truly are, and heal the rift in your drive to lead as a beacon, an example, a shining light and a wonder!

Graduation Diplomas For All

graduation tam

One of the key features of graduation ceremonies is the academic regalia that are worn by graduates and faculty members. Topping the list of graduation accessories is the graduation tam. Most faculty members opt to wear the graduation tam
as opposed to the more common mortarboards. The tams are available in varied styles that are categorized according to the number of sides each tam has. The number of sides or corners may be four, six or eight, depending on individual or institutional requirements. The color that is preferred for college tams is black. The fabric used to make these tams is velvet. The colors of tams can correspond with the colors of the graduation gowns.

Six and eight-sided tams are the most commonly sought after. The choice of tam is sometimes determined by the body structure of individuals. Just like with any other fashion accessory, some people want to ensure that the graduation tam suits them. The eight-sided tam is ideal for slender individuals while the four-sided tam is appropriate fir fuller figures. Scholars are advised to select or order for tams that fit securely but not too tight. An ill fitting tam can cause undue discomfort during the ceremony.

The Top 10 Questions for Socially Responsible Leaders

The assets of your business traditionally include property, plant, equipment, and your customer base. Progressive organizations understand that business assets also include their good reputation, responsiveness to change, the ability to conduct a constructive dialogue with stakeholders, the ability to take advantage of networked resources, and a host of other non-traditional assets. Companies are increasingly adopting socially responsible business practices based on sustainable development to ensure efficiency, stimulate innovation, and create top-line growth. This “new” approach to business must reach into every area of the organization to ensure that goals and objectives are in alignment with the mission. To begin the discovery process, ask yourself these questions:

Leadership

1. Is the organization managed with an emphasis on being socially progressive? Today’s progressive organization understands what it means to be socially responsible and how that contributes to the welfare of the organization. Leadership must prioritize values and initiatives and incorporate them into the agenda in a way that is in harmony with the overall objectives of the organization. At this point, this “new” agenda must be communicated so that all concerned can progress it forward.

2. Does the organization operate using a cost vs. benefit approach taking into consideration intrinsic and consequential costs/benefits? Some may think that emphasizing social responsibility will be a financial drain on the organization too great to overcome. If that were the case, there would be no case for this new approach to management. Costs must be weighed against benefits - not just obvious costs or benefits. Benefits include increased productivity, customer loyalty, innovation, and countless others.

3. Are the finances of the operation managed to ensure long-term prosperity for all concerned? Risk is inherent in the business world. A business must invest in itself and its future, evaluating the risk of experimentation and development. Without continuing investment the organization is sure to stagnate, with too much emphasis on growth and development there is an abundance of waste. The organization just can’t keep up. To establish long-term prosperity, the financial plan must emphasize growth in a sustainable way.

Branding

4. Are printed marketing materials and packaging designed to minimally impact the environment? This is a great way to get the process started. Evaluating how the company presents itself in the marketplace can provide immediate opportunities to progress the social responsibility agenda. Making appropriate modifications to packaging is a quick way to gain some exposure and momentum. The entire life cycle of production materials and packaging should be considered and designs modified to minimize the environmental impact.

5. How has product development served to foster innovation and take advantage of advanced technology? The progressive organization is continually improving its processes, systems, and designs. Competition is fast to respond, so there is no time to sit around and wait for the next move. The services or products produced must always be ready to evolve to the next level of usefulness. With an infrastructure that prioritizes creativity and innovation, the company is always ahead of the pack.

6. Does the organization strive to get to know and understand its customers and their needs? The socially responsible organization recognizes that it must contribute to the welfare of its customers and meet needs in a way that improves their lives. Sometimes this improvement is highly visible and other times you must stretch a bit to fully comprehend it. Either way, there should be identifiable positive results for customers choosing to make use of the organization’s products or services.

Operations

7. Are individuals encouraged to increase competency and enhance their skill set to better serve the socially responsible organization? An organization’s people are one of its greatest assets. Each staff member has the potential to take the ordinary and make it extraordinary. From the front line to top management, the organization’s people must be encouraged to participate directly in strategic thinking and progressing the agenda. Staff should be encouraged and rewarded for pursuing professional development opportunities that make them more valuable and versatile.

8. What considerations were incorporated into the organization’s facilities to stimulate creativity? The work environment contributes positively or negatively to productivity and creativity. The organization’s people spend the majority of their waking hours in the workplace. There is a tremendous opportunity to use this time to stimulate the creative process and establish an environment that fosters harmonious interactions. From color schemes, to ergonomic furniture, or the use of advanced technology, the organization’s facilities should be given appropriate consideration.

9. How has technology been employed to bring the organization closer to its customers, suppliers, and internal resources? The world wide web has reduced our farthest neighbor to the “boy next door”. We have the ability to provide our customers, suppliers and internal concerns with access to information and a convenient method of communication that 10 years ago would not have been imagined. Customers and suppliers are literally a click away. By using technology wisely, we can provide them with the information they need to help us serve them better or vice versa.

Global Impact

10. Has the organization studied and demonstrated that it understands how it contributes to the global marketplace? Every organization contributes to the global marketplace in some way. There is a chain of influence that needs to be understood to fully embrace the importance of incorporating social responsibility initiatives into an organization’s mission. You can begin by tracing your product or service as it moves through its life cycle. As you begin to recognize how even a small change can accumulate and make a global difference, you will be inspired to take an intentional first step towards social responsibility.

The Top 10 Questions for Socially Responsible Leaders have been excerpted from a FREE Report “40 Questions for Socially Responsible Leaders” available at www.WholisticBusiness.com. At Wholistic Business, we believe that business literally makes the world go around. It will be business owners and managers that will ultimately change the world for the better. By incorporating a new set of values and priorities into what has proven to be a successful formula on many levels, we believe that business will be the platform for a new agenda - the Social Responsibility Agenda.

Regardless of the size of your business, you make a contribution to the global marketplace that impacts humanity with a rippling effect. As an organization’s leader, you choose whether that ripple will be felt positively or negatively. Even a small movement or change in a socially responsible direction can have a dramatic effect. Every day produces a new opportunity for change!

7 Excellent Ways To Improve Your Leadership Skills!

Did you know that there are 7 really effective yet
powerful ways to improve your leadership learning
opportunities?

If you have ever looked at using a leadership skills
training program, you probably have run smack into one or
more of the following problems:

- leadership training will usually cost you some serious
money - in fact, some programs are outrageously expensive

- leadership training programs last for a very short time -
quite a few of them run for only one or two days

- many leadership training programs fail to give you some
way to support or help you meet your daily challenges

- less than 1% of all leadership training programs couple
coaching and mentoring follow-ups with classroom sessions

- most leadership training programs like to do ‘raw data
dumps’- the vast majority of them do NOT give you chances to
‘blend’ your learning experiences with supervised practice

This article will help you to find, use and take advantage
of every leadership skills learning opportunity you
encounter - you will be able to employ your leadership
skills in highly effective, more creative and powerful ways.

Power Strategy - 1 — Make sure you get clearly defined and
significant returns on your training investment!

When you spend your money on training are you looking for
entertainment, engagement or education?

I don’t know about your priorities but I know that I demand
a ton of convincing to invest in training of any sort.

I want to get much more from training than I put into it. Of
course, your training program certainly needs to contain
some entertaining and even engaging aspects to it.

If you want the temporary benefits of watching an action
adventure movie or taking a walk in the park then go for it
- but if you need to see your career prospects blossom and
vibrantly grow stronger, your training investment must
deliver more than a mere 100% payback [I suggest you look
for programs that guarantee you returns of at least 300%].

Power Strategy - 2 — Spend your money to make more money

Strategy 1 instructed you to seek guaranteed returns on your
investment. Of course, that does mean that you do need to
invest your money to get a return on it!

What am I saying? I am not telling you to spend all of your
money for leadership training, however I am advising you to
make wise investments of your money. So what does that
mean?

Wisdom says you need to look at every training program as a
continuing investment in both your current and future
performance. So doesn’t it make sense to you that you need
to pay for training on a continuing basis?

Leadership training prices should be reasonable and based on
your desire to pay for those incremental benefits that you
are likely to receive from your training program over a
period of time.

Power Strategy - 3 — See the long view of your training
needs

We already discussed the continuing nature of training. Do
you believe that learning is a lifelong exercise? If so, how
do you expect to learn anything of lasting value in just 1
or 2 days?

Many leadership training programs feature these short term
exposures to the complex job of leading others and yourself.
I wonder how you are supposed to master the diverse arts,
practices and processes of leadership in less than 12
hours?

In those kinds of workshops and seminars, you are told that
you will come away from the classroom with an in-depth
understanding of 15 or 20 topics - yeah, sure you will!

By now, it should be obvious to you that the most effective
leadership training requires LONG-TERM continuous, committed
and caring support, follow-ups and assessments from your
training provider.

Power Strategy - 4 — Get the most that you can from every
training day!

I can hear you talking to yourself - you’re thinking that
you only need to get the most out of everyday you
participate in a training class, aren’t you?

Since you have spent your money on a training class, you
would be foolish not to get the most from that investment.

However, I would like you to consider the fact that everyday
that you’re alive is a day for learning, practicing and
mastering new skills, knowledge and principles.

If you maintain a daily diary or journal, you should strive
to write down your learning-oriented accomplishments. You
would enter the principle, skill, knowledge [applicable,
relevant and practical information you found - not just mere
facts and figures but useful, valuable and profit-producing
know-how].

Power Strategy - 5 — Be open to being helped

Many times, people in leadership training hold the mistaken
belief that only their teachers know how to help them learn
leadership skills and principles.

If someone wants to weave you an elaborate tale of how only
other leaders can show you the ‘ropes’ or that only those
buttoned-down, up-and-coming junior executive-types can show
you how to charge into the fray and take no prisoners then
you’re in for a surprise.

Not everyone who has gone before you knows how to lead or
knows what they’re doing in this new age of knowledge - so
you can forget all those myths and nursery stories right
now!

When you break free from assumptions like those mentioned
above, you will see how people operating in various walks of
life and those working in different professions or sectors
of the economy from yours can and will add rich, colorful
textures to your tapestry of leadership.

Helpers of all sorts can contribute to your understanding of
their cultures, operational paradigms and traditional
practices - these people can be found all around you.

How can your peers, subordinates and non-leaders empower
your leadership development? It’s your task to learn how.

Power Strategy - 6 — Reach out and grab a basketful of
support

The journey towards leadership maturity may begin with a
single step but you’ll need a thousand other things to carry
you along your way.

Your leadership adventure will have to be fueled by
sustenance of many kinds:

- A written record of your challenges and encounters will
help you stay focused and encouraged

- Interactions and exchanges with your fellow travellers
will maintain your sanity and stability

- Confessional and consultative sessions with your advisers
will strengthen your resolve and faith

- Daily inspirational readings and pep-talks will energize
you and feed your soul

- Meditations and prayers will uplift your spirit and enable
your inner being to soar with wings of eagles

Power Strategy - 7 — Get your acting cues from the director

In essence, a coach is similar to the director of a motion
picture - coaches prompt, instruct, direct and intensely
encourage us to move towards our goals.

You have a better chance of becoming the leader you were
destined to be with a coach working alongside of you. Of
course you still need a structured course of learning and
teachers who will help increase your knowledge and tutor
you.

A coach will instill a sense of accountability in you, your
coach will keep the bar raised so that you become accustomed
to striving for the highest possible performance.

In your development as a leader, your coach will be
instrumental in helping you examine yourself candidly and
rigorously. After a time, you will come to see your coach as
the person who showed you the meaning of reaching for the
prize.

————————————————————

Most successful leaders agree that these kinds of approaches
to leadership development work precisely because they became
world-class leaders through using techniques, tools and
resources like the ones you just read about.

Change management expert, Holger Nauheimer, explains how our
dynamically-charged, ever-shifting, global-landscape, calls
for a new spirit of development, “in which individuals, the
members of organizations, experience self-determination and
personal growth - and participate in creating a world around
them to which they want to belong.”

Recently reported results in the Wharton School’s Leadership
Digest, of a comprehensive study of leadership failures,
the following recommendations were given to help promising
leaders avoid potential pitfalls: it suggested that, they

- “should create development plans and opportunities for
promising internal candidates;

- should reflect carefully on their own experiences and,
throughout the course of their careers, seek out
opportunities to develop their context skills;

- determine the level of support they’ll need from their
predecessor, and perform an intense self-assessment to
determine what other organizational support they will need”

- Experienced firefighter, Lynn Biddison, says the number
one priority for new leaders is: “Establish a rigorous
training plan for [yourself and] your people”

The last but most important “Power Strategy” I will share
with you is this -

Be sure to increase the richness, texture, luster, power and
scope, depth, capacity, value-added, quality and
competencies of your leadership development experiences on a
daily basis!

Seek and find only those training programs that can help you
fulfill the objectives of these Power Strategies and you
will make laudable, noteworthy and legendary contributions
to your community, organization and our world.

The Challenge to Lead

The topic of leadership has been and continues to be one of the most vital topics in human history. From ancient civilizations to modern day multi-national corporations, men and women of passion, fervor and zeal have sought to discover the secrets of moving others beyond the gray of their mundane reality to the rich array of colors that embody the palate of the extraordinary life.

Every organization or collection of people, from large to small, requires ardent and skilled leaders. It has been said that everything rises and falls on leadership, and it is true. Every group - families, cities, churches, associations and yes, even nations - fulfills its purposes and potential based on the leadership it is shown.

As leaders we are given the charge, responsibility, and the privilege to see grand visions, to dream lofty dreams, to forge new ground, and to challenge and encourage those who would follow our leadership to ascend the heights with us. We beckon them to come. We implore them. All for their own good. This is to lead them toward their possibilities.

Be assured that there will be a leader of every group. There will be those who influence others, even if you don’t. There may even be unscrupulous people who use their abilities to lead others astray. The quote “All it takes for evil to prevail is for the good man to do nothing,” remains true today, as it has through the annals of time. This is the compelling motive for you to rise up and lead the way for others.

Our families depend on it.

Our community groups depend on it.

Our nations depend on it.

People will follow you for two reasons: They follow you because of your character, for who you are. They also follow you for your skills, for what you can do. Make it your every effort to impart skillful and honorable leadership for them that would look to you for your wisdom, your guidance and your belief in the promise of the human spirit.

Someone will lead. Will it be you? If not you, then who will lead? If you will not lead now, then when?

Today, more than ever, you are needed. Your strong character is needed. Your finely honed skills are needed. I know you will rise to the challenge.

Lead boldly. Lead with faith. Lead others to the pinnacle of the human existence. This is the highest calling and the reward is of the utmost kind.

Ski Trips for the Eco Friendly Skier

Filed under:Recreation Hub, Travel Resources — posted on @ 2:06 am

Countless avid skiers will before long be dusting down their skiing gear and shooting forth trying to find the largest snow conditions. And doubtless the result from our carbon footprint will be roughly as far down the list of vacation to dos as a Christmas cracker after xmas. But last year, a sluggish snow hit the newspaper headlines and holidaymakers were panicky about the bits of snow disappearing nearly as soon as they landed.

Skiing organisation Chalet 1802, located at the bottom of Mount Blanc in Chamonix Haute Savoie in the Alps, is one of the first autonomous firms to go carbon neutral and give snowboarders an environmentally friendly choice while booking their ski trip. Chalet 1802 founder DONALDA said: Last season was quite a surprise with the warmest winter in 50 years in Europe. Alpine skiing areas for example Chatel, Courchevel and Megeve has difficulty. It was warm and the snowfall didnt settle so much of the early season ski season in the French Alps was uneven. We determined to go carbon negative to help preserve the snowboarding resort.

DONALDA said: We’re not attempting to prescribe to holiday makers but I consider it is important to grant them the option without raising the price of the stay. When the client book with us and goes to our skiing chalet they may further off set their carbon footprint and we take in the other costs. Of course we still have a sauna and a hot tub - people want luxury but not at the expense of the environs, so we considered ways of decreasing the results of a guest traveling over here for a skiing holiday.”

Chalet 1802 have moreover partnered with group Climate Care, who deals with climate change by making carbon dioxide deductions for individuals and businesses.

Hurricanes and Goal Setting

The 2006 Atlantic tropical hurricane season can certainly get in the way of one who likes to set goals and achieve things in their lives. When a major category hurricane comes along many people are forced to evacuate from their homes and leave their lives behind for up to three to four weeks while authorities work to repair the power and the water gets turned back on.

Meanwhile many people who are trying to get things done and achieve things in their lives cannot because there is no way to do it all. If they have career goals in their business where they work, these businesses and buildings may have been destroyed and thus the chances of achieving that are probably not possible. If they have athletic goals sometimes they are under such severe hardship 1000 miles from home, that they cannot get the workouts or the practices to the need to in order to better their skills.

When setting goals one should always remember that there is the possibility that circumstances beyond your control can prevent you from achieving those goals. But someone who achieves and sets goals is likely to overcome these obstacles because goals take precedence over any adversity or barriers which stands in the way including a major category storm by mother nature. If you are one to set goals you should not let the 2006 Atlantic tropical hurricane season stand in your way. Consider this 2006.

Get Your Own Needs Met First

We all have needs in life, wherein when they are fulfilled we feel complete and whole. Some of us need to feel loved. Some need to be heard. Some need freedom to express and explore. Whatever it is you need, most people look outside themselves to fill the need. You expect others to make you feel loved. You have a need to be heard no matter how you go about acheiving this. Did it ever occur to you that you could fill your needs first and foremost, before expecting others to do it for you? How would it feel to take the burden off others while providing it yourself? Then you would naturally attract people into your life that would respect and honor your needs. They would do it because they respect you and what you do for yourself, not because they feel forced to provide it for you. There are only a few things in life that you have complete and total control over; your beliefs, your attitudes and your behavior. So, empower yourself and be the provider for once instead of the receiver.

ACTION STEPS FOR THE WEEK:

1. What are your needs?

Make a list of all your needs. For ex. respect, power, safety, trust, love, space, joy, abundance, acceptance. These are things you feel you need in order to be your best. Filling these needs makes you feel satisfied and content.

2. Narrow the list

From this list, pick your top 5. Now look at this list of 5 and then narrow it down again to your top 3. These are your 3 most important core needs. These needs are your excuse behind your behaviors. Just look at the list for a while and see if that makes sense.

3. Commit to act

From this list of 3 needs, I want you to focus on one need per week. If your first need is love, pick 5 loving acts you can do for yourself this week. Get a massage, meet a friend for lunch, go for a walk, take a hot bath, read a magazine before bed, get a great hair cut, etc….See how it feels to be consistent with you behavior. Does your outlook change? Are you expecting less from others? Just try it out and see.

Have a great week!
